Ammit's primary role was to judge the souls of the deceased in the Hall of Ma'at, where the heart of the deceased was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice.

If a person's heart was found to be heavier than the feather, indicating a life of sin, Ammit would devour the soul, ensuring that the individual would not attain eternal life.
